It’s not the first word I think of when I consider what 2020 has been or what 2021 could be. But maybe it should be?

I had a dream this morning. Jesus was standing at a door, knocking. I saw someone looking through the peephole trying to decide if they should open the door or not.

I couldn’t remember exactly where that story was in scripture, but as is often the case, God led me there in my quiet time this morning. As I read through Revelations 3, I was reminded of the incredibly sad state of affairs in two of the three churches He mentions in that chapter.

By the way, the “church” is the Greek word ekklēsía – which means
a community of people expressing God’s nature here on earth.

It gave me pause to consider what Jesus is saying. Here is my paraphrase:

  • Wake up! You try to make it look like you’re alive and following me, but you’re spiritually dead. Your faith is superficial. All you’re doing is going through the motions. There’s a small remnant still seeking after me, but most of you need to get back to what you heard and believed and turn to me again.
  • You’re lukewarm and half-hearted. You stand for nothing. Your worldly wealth has made you feel self-sufficient and in need of nothing – certainly not Me. You don’t even realize you are poor, blind, and naked – miserable. You’re not living up to your potential. You’re missing the point of this life. It breaks My heart because I love you and want the best for you!
  • So turn from your indifference – wake up – change your mind – transform your old way of thinking. I won’t force you. You must choose for yourself. Decide today to align yourself with Me and My ways. This where you’ll find real life!

Let’s just say…I don’t want a superficial, lukewarm faith like that. And I’m sure you don’t either. We want to persevere and be found faithful – like the Church of Philadelphia mentioned in Revelations 3:7-13.

Now…back to my dream. Jesus was knocking on the door. This very situation is found in Revelations 3:20 which says:

Now pay attention; I am standing at the door and knocking.
If any of you hear My voice and open the door,
then I will come in to visit with you
and to share a meal at your table,
and you will be with Me.

And it goes on to say (my paraphrase):

  • Those who invite Me in and are conquerors will find their names in the Book of Life. I will acknowledge you to my Father, you will be clothed in white, and sit with Me on My throne!

Now, I don’t know about you, but that’s what I want!

I want to be alive, full of faith, standing victoriously, thriving, eating my daily bread with Jesus, getting to know Him better every single day and being a victorious conqueror!

I want my name in His Book of Life.  And I want yours there too.

There’s far more to this life than meets the eye my friends. It is so easy to forget that. But now is not the time to forget. It’s not the time to be indifferent or lukewarm.  If we are complacent – focused solely on the here and now – living as if this is all there is – we’re going to miss out on the most incredible opportunity we’ll ever have.

There’s that word again: opportunity.

I started here. And I’ll end here.

I don’t have any idea what this coming year will bring with regard to the events that are unfolding around the world.

But I do know that I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to spend the next twelve months in community with 60+ people who want to know Jesus better and align our lives more fully with Him.

People who are humble enough to know we all need to keep growing in our faith – and courageous enough to be intentional about it.

People who want to persevere no matter what’s going on in the world, and be found faithful when He returns!

These people (myself included) are taking the opportunity and opening the door. We’re reading the Bible – in chronological order – in 2021. It’s going to be awesome!

And guess what – you’re invited too! Would you like to join us? Invite a friend and sign up here.
