What is a Traditional (Classical) Naturopath?

Traditional naturopaths teach people natural lifestyle principles that support wellness. The traditional naturopath does not “diagnose” or “treat diseases,” but rather helps people implement diet and lifestyle changes that support the body’s innate ability to restore and maintain optimal health.

Traditional Naturopaths

First do no harm
Teach people natural health principles
Encourage people in their wellness journey
Believe the body has the ability to heal itself
Understand each person must take responsibility for their own wellbeing
See people as an integrated whole – spirit, soul, and body
Know that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Traditional Naturopaths DO NOT:

Diagnose or treat disease
Prescribe medication
Do surgical procedures

What is a Naturopathic Physician?

Naturopathic Physicians (ND), on the other hand, attend a four-year, graduate-level naturopathic medical school and are educated in all of the same basic sciences as an MD. They are accredited only if they are graduates from one of the seven schools listed at www.aanmc.org They can perform minor surgeries, such as removing cysts, but do not practice major surgery. NDs are trained to utilize prescription drugs, although the emphasis of naturopathic medicine is the use of natural healing agents.
