Question for you. Have you ever thought about what you want your kids to know before they leave the nest?

If you’re a parent, I know one thing for sure: You want the best for your kids. You want them to be prepared for life. You want them to thrive! And you’ll do everything you can to help them reach their God-given potential.

Living in the age of information overload, however, it’s easy to get distracted with details and lose sight of the big picture of what we’re actually trying to accomplish. What to study? Which curriculum? What classes? And the list goes on.

As a homeschool mom alum with two twenty-something kids, I’ve been reflecting on what is truly essential for kids to know before they don that cap and gown and set sail into their future.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll share my list of must-knows.

Today, let’s start at the top with priority #1: Knowing God

Everything else pales in comparison to this. My deepest desire was (and is) for my kids to build their lives on a rock-solid foundation of Truth.

• I want them to know God. Trust God. And see Him as a loving Father who wants the best for them.

• I want their identity to be firmly established – to know they are a masterpiece created on purpose and for a purpose. That they are loved by the God who created them.

• I want them to seek to align themselves with Him in every area of life.

Why? So they will thrive! Meaning they glorify Him by revealing His character through their lives. I want the same for myself, my family, and my friends – including you!

So how do we actually accomplish this high and lofty goal? Well, my friend, it starts with us. We have to get to know God ourselves. You cannot give what you don’t have. Life is busy, I know. But ladies…you’ve got to feed yourself if you’re going to feed your kids.

When we plant ourselves in the soil of God’s word, we start taking in nutrients and the Truth becomes who we are, how we think, what we do and what we say! Nourishing yourself each day with God’s word adds up over time and will change you from the inside out.

Remembering you have a great and glorious God who loves you and wants the best for you strengthens you in ways the world never will. Time with Him reminds you that you’re part of a bigger story and that you have a unique role to play. There are so many benefits that I could go on and on but suffice to say just as air, water, and food are not optional, nourishing your heart and mind with Truth is essential for all of us.

Here are three fundamental steps that will help you – and your kids – get to know God better each day:

Read
Open your Bible and simply ask God to help you know Him better. Underline a verse that stands out to you.

Record
Write down the verse and what He is saying to you in your journal.

Respond
Is God asking you to do something? Take that next step.

There are so many benefits to spending a few minutes talking with God each day. When we write down scripture, it’s more powerful than just reading it. When we consider it in light of our own life, it’s on its way to making a difference in us. And when we take the step He’s asking us to take – wow – now we are putting our faith into action.

Suddenly, we’re not just reading about God. We are getting to know Him and living a life of faith! The living Word of God becomes part of who we are, how we think, and how we live. This is how we grow, friends. This is how we thrive!

And that is how we invite our children do the same – by knowing Him too!
